It’s not a proper birthday without a cake, and Cubs from across Bath have been busy decorating birthday cakes to celebrate 100 years of Cub Scouts in 2016!

In the city-wide competition, the Cubs created their own designs with icing, jelly beans, chocolate and fruit.  The cakes will be judged by a panel of Leaders and the winning Cub Pack will receive a gift voucher to spend on outdoor gear.

The designs on the cakes have varied from reading ‘Cubs 100’ to depicting the activities Cubs enjoy including fire lighting, games and camping.  Cubs from Combe Down recreated the special centenary badge with cupcakes whilst Bathampton Cubs made a campfire scene.

The competition marks the start of a year of celebration events.  In the coming months the young people will undertake a birthday inspired adventure packed programme.  The Weston Village Cub pack is running a special 100 inspired challenge with a limited edition badge for those who complete all one hundred tasks.  In May, there will be a County Jamboree for over 3,000 participants with a very large birthday party, and later in the year there will be a special cinema screening of The Jungle Book, which is a firm favourite as many Cub names and activities were inspired by the Rudyard Kipling stories.

Cub Scouts have seen many changes over the last century.  Called Wolf Cubs and originally only open to boys, the junior Scouts’ badge requirements once included reciting the national anthem, turning a somersault and making a model warship.  Whilst it is unlikely most girls and boys would be taught this now, many of the skills from 1916, such as road safety, fire lighting and first aid, are still relevant today.

Cub Scouting provides an inspiring programme of everyday adventure for girls and boys aged 8 to 10½.  Over 200 activities, including adventure camps, climbing and water zorbing, are on offer. Zak, a Cub from Bathampton said, “I’ve tried so many new things at Cubs and this is going to be a really exciting year. I can’t wait to go camping again!”

Adult volunteer Nathan Hawkins said, “It’s very rewarding to support a long-running movement which is more relevant than ever before.  Cub Scouting gives young people opportunities to try new things, to push themselves and to learn life skills.  We encourage them to have an adventure and to enjoy the outdoors.”
